Offices have evolved beyond recognition over the 21st century. Gorgeous open plan spaces and a modern attitude to everything from policy to benefits has seen employee satisfaction rates soar. But between cross-site working, hot desking, Deilveroo lunches and ASOS drops it’s hard to keep track of office coming and goings.
This not only poses a problem for the safety of your staff, but that of your office building, equipment and stock too. That’s why we’ve put together a list of simple ways you can ensure office safety and keep that attractive modern culture thriving too:
Hire a receptionist
Having someone on reception brings much more than just a smiling face to welcome people. It’s someone to get to know your staff, and recognise strangers, as well as being able to report anything suspicious going on front of house. You can also introduce a guest book for people to sign in and out of, along with logging car licence plates, to add that extra level of security.
Introduce lanyards
Although lanyards aren’t the most laid back or fashionable accessory for your staff, they will boost your security. If you spot someone not sporting one you can make sure you keep a wary eye out. Plus, if your lanyards come complete with a photo card slot, you can create ‘guest passes’ that visitors get when they sign in – red-flagging those who’ve slipped past the reception desk.
Get a door entry system
Speaking of security cards, they can also double up as access control. Having a good security gate and door on your office block provides a double barrier for any potential burglar to get through. Plus, registering cards or fobs to your employees means you can check who comes in at what hour – so it’s easy to draw up a suspect list for any stolen property. They’ll also aid fire drills by instantly creating a roster of who’s in the building that day.
Restrict your rooms
If you have certain rooms that hold value, make sure they’re only accessible by members of staff you trust. You can put access control in place for stock rooms, server rooms etc. making it harder for sensitive information or expensive equipment to get taken in a burglary.
Invest in CCTV
If you haven’t already installed it, CCTV is a sure-fire way to catch any intruders in the act. New infrared cameras use the latest tech to create a clear picture in the dark. And if you have a smart package you can set up notifications, so if an intruder is detected you’ll be alerted. That way you can quickly inform the police or your security team.
