Top tips for securing your shed

If you’re lucky enough to have a shed, you’ll know just how useful they can be. Some people see their shed as a dumping ground, a place to simply store tools, bikes or garden furniture. While others view their shed, or other outbuildings, as an extension of their home and a way to enhance their outdoor living.

However you use your shed, the chances are you don’t pay the same level of attention to its security as you do to the rest of your property. This could make it an easier target than you’d wish it to be.

With this in mind, here are just some ways to secure garden sheds and keep their contents safe.

Upgrade your lock

It may sound simple, but changing your shed lock to a more sturdy, robust one will act as a good deterrent to opportunists and give you a little more peace of mind knowing your protection is up to scratch.

Check your windows

Whatever you use your shed for, it will no doubt contain items of value. Use curtains or privacy film to cover any windows and keep prying eyes at bay.

Safety in numbers

For large, expensive items like bikes, it’s a good idea to lock them together. That way, if an intruder does get into your shed, they’ll have real difficulty taking your valuables. Making life difficult for them is a great common sense shed security idea.

Light it up

If your shed is out of sight in a dark area of your garden, it’s attractive to intruders. A good tip is to ensure it’s always in sight and lit up at night. Fitting motion activated lights will not only startle any intruders, but also mean you always have a clear view of what’s going on.
